Your Life Is Sacred from the Start : Spiritual Growth
No matter what you’ve gone through, your life is sacred. Every experience, pleasant or painful, has helped shape the person you are today.
Years ago, my brother tried to make me feel ashamed for my past — for having multiple relationships and a failed marriage. He compared his life to mine, believing his was “purer” because he married young, stayed in our hometown, and lived what appeared to be a simple, stable life.
My story was different. I left France when I was barely eighteen, moved to England to work and improve my English, and later came to New York City just before my twentieth birthday — with a small bag and a hundred dollars in my pocket. Life wasn’t easy. I worked two or three jobs at times just to make ends meet. I met kind people who helped me survive, and others who made things harder.
Those years were full of lessons. They tested me, stretched me, and ultimately shaped my inner strength.
So when my brother said those hurtful words, I paused. Then I told him calmly,
“I disagree. Every experience I’ve had was a stepping stone that made me who I am today. I wouldn’t change a thing.”
That was the first time he stopped trying to shame me. Perhaps he didn’t understand that I was speaking from a spiritual place — that every hardship and every so-called “mistake” had been part of my soul’s unfolding.
Every Experience Serves Your Spiritual Growth
Your journey on this earth is about your spiritual maturation — your awakening into higher understanding. Every event, every heartbreak, every challenge is designed for your spiritual growth.
When you start to see your life through spiritual eyes, you realize that nothing was ever wasted. Even the moments that seemed wrong or painful were perfectly placed to help you grow into who you’re meant to be.
In my own life, every challenge eventually led me toward my beloved spiritual teacher and the path of Surat Shabda Yoga. I can now see that everything — the pain, the risks, the mistakes — was preparing me for this deeper path.
No Shame ; Life Humbles us Until We Learn Compassion

If anyone ever tries to shame you for your past or the choices you’ve made, remember:Your life is sacred from the start. It was designed just for you. Every experience, “good” or “bad,” was necessary for your evolution.
It’s not about sin. It’s about spiritual growth.
Ironically, years after that conversation, my brother went through his own awakening. He left his wife after having been unfaithful, something he once judged so harshly in others. It was his turn to face life’s lessons.
That’s how it works — life humbles us until we learn compassion.
A Gentle Reminder for Spiritual Growth
Never judge someone else’s path. You don’t know what lesson their soul came here to learn. If you can, offer kindness, or a word that uplifts. And if not, simply hold space and let them walk their journey.
We are all learning. We are all healing. Life is not here to condemn us — it is here to awaken us.
So trust that your life, too, is sacred. Every experience is guiding you closer to your true self. Your life is sacred indeed!
