Enhancing Your Life Through Spiritual Awareness Techniques & Practices

When I first began exploring spirituality (I didn't really know what it meant), but I knew I needed help with myself, my scattered feelings, my incessant negative thoughts, sentiment of jealousy at times which I hated to have, the unhappiness I experienced, the betrayal from friends, the overwhelming feeling of failure i had. My life was not nearly anything I wanted it to be!

The world seemed fine around me in the late 80s early 90s but my life was not, I was searching for something deeper - a way to connect with myself, a way to control my negative thoughts, a way to feel free and simply happy inside, and a more meaningful way of life.

What I found was not just a set of practices but ancient practices that made sense to me, that very obviously transformed my daily life and habits for the better.

After a while, It was like discovering a secret garden within me, where peace, clarity, and energy bloomed naturally.

If you’re craving that kind of growth and structure in your spiritual journey, I’d love to share some insights and practical steps that have helped me and many others.

Why Spiritual Awareness Techniques Matter

Spiritual awareness techniques are more than just rituals or moments of quiet. They are tools that help us tune into the subtle energies and truths that can guide our lives. When practiced regularly, these techniques can:

  • Enhance your emotional resilience by helping you observe your feelings without being overwhelmed.

  • Increase your energy levels by aligning your mind, body, and spirit.

  • Deepen your understanding of spiritual principles in a way that feels practical and applicable.

  • Create a sense of balance and calm amidst the chaos of daily life.

For example, I remember a time when stress was taking over my days. By incorporating simple breathing exercises and mindful pauses, I noticed a shift. The tension eased, and I could approach challenges with a clearer mind. These techniques don’t require hours of practice; even a few minutes can make a difference.

Practical Spiritual Awareness Techniques to Try Today

Let’s dive into some of the most effective spiritual awareness techniques that you can start using right now. These are easy to integrate into your daily routine and don’t require any special equipment.

1. Pranayama or Breath Control

This is the foundation of many spiritual practices. Simply focus on your breath - the inhale and exhale. When your mind wanders, gently bring it back to your breath. This practice helps ground you in the present moment.

  • Try this: Sit comfortably, close your eyes, and close your mouth to only breathe through your nose. Take a slow inhale through your nose counting up to 4 or 5,

  • Then exhale slowly through your nose counting to the same amount.

  • Do this for about 10 breaths.

  • When done, lie down on the floor and relax your breath so it is natural and normal. for about 30 sec.

  • Sit up and see how you feel

  • Do Another Round of 10 breaths (follow the same way)

2. Journaling Your Spiritual Insights

Writing down your thoughts, feelings, and any spiritual experiences will make you more attuned to your subtle body and all the signs given to you by the creator. Over time it will deepen your awareness naturally. It’s a way to track your growth and uncover patterns.

  • Try this: Each evening, jot down three things you noticed about your spiritual journey that day.

  • If you are going through a difficult experience, use the journaling process to word all that you feel, believe, and understand. All that you wished you had said, or changed in this experience.

  • You'll need to calm down your emotional mind before you can see clearly what is happening and how you can change this to move beyond it. Although it is part of your growth, it isn't necessarily spiritual.

  • Journaling is a way of assessing and improving your comprehension or discovery of yourself while being subject to challenges in the world. The challenges we face ARE THERE to help us mature on our journey.

3. Nature Connection

Spending time in nature always relaxes us, rejuvenates our senses, and helps us ground our volatile emotions. It is a way to recalibrate ourselves so we can awaken our spiritual senses instead of living in the chaos of our negative thoughts. It is a way of activating the interconnectedness of all life for ourselves.

  • Try this: Find a forest, an empty park, a beach, a garden filled with vegetables (anything that is nearby you that resembles nature), and take a walk through it. Start letting your senses be filled with the scent of the plants, the ocean, the clean air. Let your sight be imbued with the colors you see, tune in to the sound of nature, birds, insects, trees, waves. Allow yourself to taste the air, a flower, a piece of bark. Don't be afraid to use all your senses. We were made to experience life with these 5 senses and revive. Use your hands to touch the earth, trees, flowers, veggies presenting themselves as you walk through.

  • Use all 5 senses: sight, smell, hearing, taste, and touch. These are gifts from the creator.

4. Visualization

Visualization is a powerful tool for us to learn to expand. I know for myself, in my 20s, I felt stuck and wasn't able to visualize very well.

But what I have found is that visualizing a pet I love was the easiest for me to imagine. Use whatever works for you. I think a pet (cat, dog, guinea pigs: this was my pet of choice, or hens, hamster, etc.) will bring a loving thought within your heart effortlessly.

It will easily change your state of mind and calm you immediately.

Some people like to visualize a bright light or energy flowing through their body, cleansing and energizing them. If this works for you, do it.

A pet, I find is more personal, and an open heart, a loving heart brings more changes and results that anything else you can imagine.

Visualization can be a powerful way to shift a stuck mindset and negative energy.

  • Try this: Before sleep, visualize your favorite pet, imagine yourself kissing it, holding it, feeling their soft fur and warm body making you feel secure and loved. I enjoy watching them sleep (like a cat, they are so great at sleeping without a care in the world!) or playing by themselves and being so happy.

  • Or visualize a warm light filling your body from head to toe.

5. Gratitude & Contentment As a Daily Practice

Most of us today are in a state of fight or flight! Due to the world today, the pollution we are exposed to, the food we eat is contrary for us to have a grounded mind, the lack of nature around us, and social media that bombard us constantly with unnecessary info. All of this affects our overall health but mainly induces a chemical reaction in our brain that isn't conducive to Love, Gratitude, Happiness, Relaxation, and Centeredness.Practicing gratitudes opens the heart and shifts your focus from lack to abundance.

  • Try this: Each morning and each evening, list three things you’re grateful for, no matter how small.

  • But don't just jot them down and be done. Take a moment with your breath techniques to imbibe in what it means to be grateful for this or for that.

For example: I am so grateful for my sister: I will take a moment to think about her. Admire all that she does for others, how she works so hard to be the best grandma, how she is so thoughtful in everything she does, etc. I will take my time to really see her. It's not a fleeting thought, it is a pure moment of love toward that person.

While we do this, we give them Blessings. Whether you know it or not, you understand it or not, it is happening! It is an opportunity to feel yourself with love, care, and any progressive thoughts instead of harboring destructive thoughts.

Our mind is an entity that loves to destroy. Yes it is. Take a look at the world and you'll probably agree with me.

Gratitude and contentment is something we have to exercise. Over time it will become natural and spontaneous! You'll do it all day long and on the spot with everyone you meet, and in the end even yourself. Imagine that!!

These techniques are simple but powerful. They create a foundation or a space for opening your spiritual heart and help you in your day to day life. It will give you a sense of a greater you that exists within and beyond the flesh. Don't be afraid, just enjoy.

How to Build a Consistent Spiritual Routine

One of the biggest challenges I faced was staying consistent. It’s easy to get excited and then lose momentum. Here’s what helped me build a sustainable routine:

  • Start small: Even 5 minutes a day is enough to begin.

  • Set a specific time: Morning or evening works best for me, but find what fits your schedule.

  • Create a sacred space: It could be a corner with a candle, crystals, or anything that feels special.

  • Use reminders: Set alarms or notes to prompt your practice.

  • Be gentle with yourself: Some days will be easier than others. That’s okay.

Remember, the goal is progress, not perfection. Over time, these small moments add up to profound transformation.

Integrating Spiritual Awareness Techniques with Holistic Wellness

Spiritual growth doesn’t happen in isolation. It’s deeply connected to your physical and emotional well-being. When I started paying attention to my diet, sleep, and especially my physical activity, I noticed my spiritual practices became more vibrant and effective.

Here are some ways to integrate holistic wellness with your spiritual awareness techniques:

  • Nutrition: Eat foods that nourish your body and mind. I know this will be taken as controversial for some of you but Fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains will NOT support your mind's health and groundedness. You want a meat based diet to completely feed your cells of amino acids they desperately need, of fat your brain cannot live with. Essentially you want to nourish your body properly with animal protein & fat (add some veggies if you like them), avoid carbs and sugar (natural like fruits and unnatural like processed carbs) to help your mind feel vibrant, have true clarity and real energy.

  • Again, eat what you feel comfortable with. If you want to know more about my diet and why I eat this way; check out my blog post:

  • Movement: Yoga, walking, or gentle stretching can help release stagnant energy, open your heart, release negativity which helps you flow with spiritual creativity and spiritual growth, fine tuning your spiritual awareness.

  • Rest: Prioritize quality sleep to allow your body and spirit to rejuvenate. Each of us needs a certain amount of sleep, you need to find out what works for you so you don't feel exhausted. If you need 6 hours make sure to have that. Some of us need a minimum of 8 to 9 hours. When I was going through my brain injury recovery I slept all the time and toward the end I still needed at least 10 hours of sleep every night. Today I can sleep about 7 hours and I feel great.

  • Emotional care: Practice self-compassion and seek support when needed. Don't be an island unto yourself! Although I am a bit of a loner myself and don't like to share my feelings with others. Why? because I have been crossed so many times that I stopped trusting others with my life. None the less; It is important to have a safe place to turn to. Or friends you can be with that don't ask questions where you can resource and heal silently in their presence.

  • Bottomline: Finding what works for you is all that matters!

By caring for your whole self, you create a fertile ground for spiritual growth. It’s a beautiful cycle where wellness and spirituality feed each other.

Embracing Your Unique Spiritual Journey

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is that there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. Your spiritual path is uniquely yours. What works for me might not resonate with you, and that’s perfectly fine. Also as we expand we change therefore our practice will change. Years ago I used to love chanting as part of my ritual. It felt very effective and rewarding. Today I would never. It isn't part of my spiritual routine anymore. I have other means of connecting with the Divine, which I talk about in depth in The Devoted Way Program.

Explore different techniques, listen to your intuition, and trust the process. If you’re curious about deepening your connection, consider exploring spiritual practice resources that offer guidance tailored to your needs.

Remember, spiritual awareness is not about achieving a certain state or goal. It’s about being present, open, and compassionate with yourself as you grow.

Taking the Next Step in Your Spiritual Growth

If you’re ready to take your spiritual awareness techniques to the next level, consider setting intentions for your practice. What do you want to cultivate? Peace, clarity, energy, or something else?

Here are some ideas to keep your journey vibrant:

  • Join a community or group that shares your interests.

  • Explore digital courses or memberships that offer structured guidance.

  • Dedicate time each week to reflect on your progress.

  • Experiment with new techniques and tools.
